Despite living in a world of finite resources, Western cultures often keep a throwaway mindset when it comes to consumption. They trash and re-purchase rather than repair, allow for planned obsolescence in their products, and exalt “newness” as a marker of desirability and even status.
Our challenge is for designers to turn this paradigm on its head. Reframe the Western mindset around product consumption to allow for resources to be consumed in a replenishable, sustainable way.
